The Isabela State University (ISU) hosts the 6th Intellectual Property Masterclass (IPMC) of the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) at Boulevard Town Square Events Place, Cauayan City, Isabela on January 24-26, 2024.

The University welcomed the said national-wide masterclass which is the first face-to-face event since it started last November 2023. It was attended by at least 150 participants from thirty-nine (39) research-oriented agencies and institutions across Regions II (Cagayan Valley), III (Central Luzon), VII (Central Visayas), IX (Zamboanga Peninsula), X (Northern Mindanao), XII (SOCCSKSARGEN), and XIII (Caraga).

The 6th IPMC was implemented by DOST-PCAARRD as part of its Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) Program with the Association of Patent Agent Qualifying Examination (PAQE) Professionals, Inc. (APP) as its training provider through its pool of resource persons and facilitators.

Now on its fifth and last module, the event aims to explain and demonstrate the whole patent application flow to capacitate stakeholders and create a competitive agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) innovation system anchored on the initiatives of the DOST-PCAARRD Innovation and Technology Center (DPITC).

In its continued commitment to strengthen  and support innovation, intellectual property management, and commercialization, the University also sent its delegates to the said masterclass with Dr. Janet P. Cunanan (Director, ISU Roxas R&D KTM) and Dr. Jaypee A. Zipagan (Former Director, ISU San Mariano R&D KTM) as representatives.

Malaking tulong ito kasi doon sa mga research outputs natin specifically on technology development, magagawa natin siyang ma-applyan ng ownership ng school, ng ISU system. So that would lead to commercialization also para hindi sayang ‘yung mga outputs and researches ng mga estudyante at ng faculty,” Dr. Cunanan responded when asked about the value of the masterclass for the University.

Graduation Ceremony | January 26, 2024

The graduation ceremony is the culmination of a three-month and a five-module intensive training on IP protection and management that started last November 2023 with the aim of expanding initiatives focused on managing research and development outputs.

Dr. Ricmar P. Aquino, Isabela State University (ISU) President welcomed the attendees of the said event by expressing his profound greetings and sharing his belief that the IPMC is a proactive step to educate and empower individuals in the field of IP to promote innovation and protect the rights of inventors and creators.

During the continuation of the program, several greetings and messages were also given by DOST officials along with awarding the certificates of completion to the seventy-eight (78) masterclass graduates. Special awards such as: Mock Exam Topnotchers (for Chemical and Mechanical Patenting Categories) and Top IP Filers (for Patent and Utility Model Categories) were given to the outstanding participants of the participating universities and institutions.

Sec. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. (Secretary, DOST), in his message, hoped that the 15-day masterclass serves as a transformative experience and a catalyst for inspiration, collaboration, and innovation. He also challenged the participants that the lessons learned through the IPMC should be used to shape a future that benefits everyone’s journey of progress.

“Furthermore, I implore you to carry the torch of knowledge back to your respective universities and regions. Let the insights gained from this IP masterclass empower your institutions, turning them into beacons of innovation and intellectual progress”, Solidum said.
