Isabela State University (ISU) is hosting a Workshop Forum on Climate Justice Framework from September 9-10, 2025 at the ISU Climate Change Center. Organized by the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ) and Synergy Pilipinas, an institutional partner of the University, ISU was also invited to participate and contribute through the six (6) members of its delegation from the ISU Echague and Cabagan Campuses.
Driven by the realization that climate change is both an environmental and justice issue, the said Workshop Forum aims to create systemic solutions and promote the voices of communities calling for the declaration of climate emergency, the transition to clean and renewable energy, the mobilization of national resources for adaptation and resilience, and the protection of livelihoods and the rights of marginalized sectors.
It can be remembered that in 2024, the Province of Isabela suffered 1.5 billion pesos in agricultural losses due to the El Niño drought. During that same year, typhoon Pepito devastated Nueva Vizcaya and was declared in a state of calamity with nearly 1.4 billion pesos in damages (Philippine Star, 2024).
With the end goal of preparing and presenting a Provincial Plan Synthesis for Climate Justice, the following sessions will be held:
- Session 1: PMCJ Orientation which will present an introduction to the Climate Justice Framework and the PMCJ Campaigns
- Session 2: Climate Emergency 101 focusing on Climate Emergency Campaign goals and objectives along with proposed strategies and activities
- Session 3: Renewable Energy 101 highlighting the basics of renewable energy including its definition, classifications, and sources and technologies
In his message of support for the event, Dr. Boyet L. Batang (University President) emphasized that it is possible to craft a framework that safeguards both the planet and the dignity of every person who inhabits it. He hoped that the gathering and the workshop would ignite not only ideas but also the courage to confront inequities, to lead with empathy, and to act boldly for the sake of future generations.
“And therefore, we can turn the urgency of climate change into the power of collective justice…may this forum workshop inspire us all to be the champions of both the earth and community,” Dr. Batang said.
