Isabela State University (ISU) and the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University formally signed another Collaboration Research Agreement (CRA) under Project NEXUS, an initiative aimed to improve the Japan–Philippines cooperation in water security.
For years, ISU and DPRI-KU have collaborated to advance scientific exchange and develop research-based solutions to address pressing challenges in the Philippines’ hydrologic and disaster landscape. Through Project NEXUS, this collaboration has expanded to integrate multidisciplinary research efforts and strengthen knowledge-sharing between the two countries.
During the said signing, ISU was represented by Dr. Boyet L. Batang (University President), while Prof. Tomoharu Hori (Director, DPRI-KU) signed on behalf of DPRI-KU.
The activity is part of a two-day meeting starting on November 25 that is expected to broaden the scope of joint research and technical cooperation to lead in deeper engagement and scientific activities.
In addition to the formal signing, the meeting also includes strategic discussions on the proposed ASEAN DPRI Hub which is seen to be a regional platform for collaborative research on disaster resilience and water-related challenges. The hub also aims to mobilize expertise across ASEAN member countries and enhance coordinated responses to natural hazards.
Participants of the meeting will also hear presentations on ongoing and future initiatives under the WISER Program, a capacity-building effort designed to strengthen local competencies. A dialogue will then follow to provide a space for the exchange of insights, research perspectives, and collaborative opportunities among the involved institutions.
Through this engagement, ISU continues its mission to develop and generate science-based solutions that support community resilience, sustainable water management, and disaster preparedness in the region.
