Isabela State University (ISU) continues to implement programs that enhance local livelihoods through technology-driven agricultural initiatives. With the Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) of ISU Cauayan Campus, the University conducted an extension program titled “Empowering Communities: Agricultural Innovation for Sustainable Growth: Pato-Manok, Gulay, Maka-Kabuteng Pangkabuhayan Program for the Province of Isabela” on December 6, 2024.
The program aimed to equip local farmers and households with practical knowledge and modern skills in sustainable farming systems such as integrated duck-chicken production, vegetable cultivation, and mushroom farming.
The hands-on training and workshop on oyster mushroom production and hydroponics took place at the IAT Crop Protection Room, led by IAT faculty and staff in collaboration with fourth-year Bachelor of Agricultural Technology (BAT) students. Participants included farmers from Barangay Burgos and members of the Isabela Green Ladies Organization (IGLO), who actively engaged in demonstrations and interactive discussions.
Participants expressed hope for continuous training and technical support to fully apply what they have learned. They recognized that ongoing guidance and access to modern agricultural innovations could further uplift their economic conditions and strengthen their community’s resilience.
Dr. Isaias Dela Peña (Extension Coordinator and Institute Instructor) expressed satisfaction with the completion of the second phase of the program. He emphasized that such activities not only empower local communities but also serve as valuable learning experiences for students enrolled in the Community Organizing and Rural Development course.
Through initiatives like this, ISU reaffirms its commitment to inclusive agricultural development and community empowerment. By integrating research, education, and extension services, the University helps rural families improve food security, generate sustainable income, and adopt environmentally sound farming practices to turn innovation into a tool for long-term growth and resiliency across Isabela’s rural communities.
