Working toward a goal to save lives, the College Red Cross Youth Council (CRCY) of Isabela State University Echague (ISUE), in collaboration with two (2) provincial medical institutions, organized a Bloodletting Drive in the College of Nursing simulation room today, November 14.
With over 50 volunteer blood donors registered in the event, a total of 28 blood packs, equivalent to 14,000 mL of blood, were accumulated jointly by Isabela South Specialists Hospital, Inc. (ISSHI) and Southern Isabela Medical Center (SIMC). The blood packs were promptly stored in their respective blood banks.
“When you donate blood, sabi ko nga, you actually don’t know kung gaano kalaki ‘yung impact na nagawa nung pagdodonate ninyo ng dugo… for the patients that you have helped, talagang mapapahaba mo ‘yung buhay nila,” Diwata Grace Fabros-Bausa, MD, a Pathologist at SIMC, told The Forum, explaining that 500 ml of blood can save the lives of at least three (3) patients.
Dr. Fabros-Bausa also puts forward her idea of bloodletting’s importance in the educational curricula.
“‘Yung mga 18 years old and above, we want the students to be aware. Gusto nga namin ma-incorporate sana ito sa mga class. Masabi rin na we want students to be aware of the importance of donating blood, of helping,” the Pathologist said in an interview.
Each bag of donated blood contains transfusable plasma components, including white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets, all derived from the blood.
Meanwhile, Jame Perzeus Babas, a first-year nursing student and first-time donor, expressed his post -bloodletting procedure sentiments.
“As a first time-donor, I have felt happiness in me. Because as a [financially] unstable student, I cannot help people with financial assistance, but at least, through donating blood, I am able to prolong one’s life; and I think donating blood is a way of God making me an Instrument for helping others,” said the novice donor.
The bloodletting activity was also partnered with the Disaster and Nutrition Alliance of Nursing Students, reinforcing its commitment to both social well-being and good health.
