The following have been undertaken to enrich the program offerings:

  • Increased units on course audit
  • Outcome based syllabuses and grading system (CMO No. 46)
  • Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction - Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) in BS and post-graduate programs

To further enrich the program offerings in the University system, the management invited two Filipino scientists, namely, Dr. Abigail P. Cid-Andres and Dr. Ginno L. Andres, as short-term experts under the Balik-Scientist Program of the Department of Science and Technology. Orientation meeting with the experts was conducted on July 17, 2016 at ISU Cauayan.

Dr. Abigail P. Cid-Andres earned her doctoral degree in Chemistry from the Kyoto University in Japan. She is currently affiliated with  Hydrospheric Environment Analytical Laboratory, Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University. Her specialization includes chemistry, environment, hydrosphere, oceanography, and limnology. She constructed her own solid phase extraction preconcentration set-up, clean boot, and established expertise on clean trace analysis using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).

Dr. Cid will conduct lectures, seminars and workshops to faculty members, researchers, students, and/or general public and produce modules and manuals on the following topics:

  • Theoretical and technological approaches on climate change studies
  • Biogeochemical cycle of nutrients
  • Trace elemental analysis of sea water
  • Environmental analysis
  • Constructing solid phase extraction preconcentration set-up, clean booth
  • Clean trace analysis using (ICP-MS)
  • Topics for the workshops:
  • Solid phase extraction
  • Construction of improvised solid phase extraction (SPE) manifold for trace elemental analysis in water samples
  • Construction and assembly of clean bench
  • Scientific writing and submission of articles to international journals
  • Field sampling technique

Dr. Ginno L. Andres is a Doctor of Engineering who is currently connected with Combustion Engineering Laboratory, Institute of Science and Engineering at Ritsumeikan University in Japan. Dr. Andres, whose expertise is Tribology Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Engineering, has been developing activated charcoal-based electrode using polymeric material and a solvent to utilize for Capacitive Deionization (CDI). He developed carbon electrode with high mechanical strength, high rate of hydrophilic property and high ion adsorption capacity.

Dr. Andres will lead a research on water purification system based on the capacitive deionization technique.
